This has to be one of my favorite things to talk about in this blog because it's something I've been working on for a long time. I have shoulder length hair at the moment, but my hair did go down my back until I used coconut products in my hair that broke it off. However, I do want to share some tips that helped me throughout the years to gain length and keep healthy. By the way, I do have what you might call 4c hair, but I don't go by those labels and my hair is low porosity.
1.) Washing my hair every two weeks
You want to make sure you are not leaving your hair too long in protective styles because this could break it off more. Washing regularly ensures that your pores are being unclogged and dirt is removed. Before you wash, you might want to consider detangling your hair with a conditioner or detangler. Then you want to put it in big sections and proceed to wash. You want to use a shampoo that is not harsh on the hair. I use an apple cider vinegar rinse shampoo or baby shampoo.
2.) Deep Condition!!
When you wash your hair, you want to make sure you are deep conditioning when you wash. Deep conditioning penetrates the hair and gives it the extra moisture it needs. I like to use Aussie Moist 3-minute miracle because it gives me the extra slip and moisture. I typically leave it in for about 10-15 minutes despite what it says.
3.) Follow-Up With Leave-In Conditioner
This is important. Once you get everything out of your hair, you want to make sure you follow up with a leave-in conditioner. I would pick one that has oils in it and one that is thick with slip. I like to use the Aussie Moist conditioner as a leave-in even though it says to wash it out. I love it because it is very moisturizing to my hair. Lately I've been adding Chebe powder, extra oils. and water to my leave-in conditioner.
4.) Cover Your Hair at Night
If you have a satin bonnet or a silk cap, I advise you use it when you go to bed because this could help you to not lose hair strands.
5.) Safe Protective Styles
We know what I mean when I say safe protective styles. This means nothing too damaging or tight. Personally, I like to do chunky braids with my natural hair or twists. Something that is quick, easy, and low manipulation. I can redo them about every two weeks. Make sure that you oil your scalp every few days and you can spritz your hair with water, too.
6.) Patience
Patience is what you want to have in this process because your hair won't grow long overnight. I like to focus on other areas of my life while waiting. Working out and getting my body in shape distracts me.
