1. Expect Diversity
Being that Maryland is close to the nation's capital, there are plenty of job opportunities and physical attractions that make the area so densely populated. Since the area draws so many people, you have many different food options to choose from which is a really great perk because it helps you to gain more of a cultural experience. There's still a pretty good number of places that I haven't tried before I moved to Pennsylvania but if you ever are in the metropolitan area, I encourage you to do your research and find a place that is interesting. As far as the physical attractions, there are plenty of museums (The Smithsonian, etc.), the Washington monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Pentagon, and many malls to shop around. Expect there to be many protests because it is more people, and you are near the nation's capital, so the area tends to be more liberal leaning.
2. Different Weather
One of the cool things about living in this area is that you get to experience all four seasons, unless you're one who can't handle the cold. Not only do you get diverse culture, but you get diverse weather. The weather can also be unpredictable as far as rain throughout the year. There are plenty of thunderstorms during the summer but not as much as Florida, so I hear. There was one summer where a thunderstorm uprooted a bunch of trees in the area and that was the worst one, I've experienced. The area does have not-so severe floods and tornadoes, unlike other states.
3.) Fast Paced
Being that the area is condensed, expect that people are in a rush to get anywhere so there might not be the best drivers around, and that's up for debate. If you're not very fast paced yourself then I would be mindful when you go out because there are some people that are not patient.
4.) More Crime
Being that the area has many people, you would also expect that there is much more crime in the area which is true. I would recommend that if you do move to the area to be mindful of your surroundings especially at night. There are many people that live there who do not like to go out very much because of the crime and erratic behavior of others, so while there is much diversity, you do need to keep a sharp eye when you go out. There are people who choose not to raise their kids in the area because of crime rate but I will argue that your child can still thrive in this area, and there is going to be crime no matter where you go.
5.) Educational Opportunities
Again, because it is very diverse, you have plenty of educational opportunities for you and your child, if you have any. There are plenty of people and cultures to learn from if you are interested. There are museums in the area that most people explore and recreational activities to enjoy, such as parks, camping sites, libraries, hiking areas, and sports. If you are into volunteering, there are so many volunteer programs that allow you to be involved in the community and you can learn a great deal that way; parks and recreation in Prince George's County, MD is a good one for example. The area does have good universities, such as Howard University, University of Maryland College Park and others if you're interested in college, but I will say you don't need to attend a university to succeed. There are many people in the area that will tell you that you need to go to school so you do have that pressure but there are other avenues. You can learn without attending a college and life is more than being physically successful.
